Golden is a known and treasured as an outdoor playland for both families and hardcore thrill-seekers. The breathtaking beauty of its natural surroundings – its rivers, valleys, mountains, and wetlands – practically unrivalled. But everybody also likes to get a bit of pleasure from their built environment every once in a while – here are a few fun things to do in and around Golden if you are kicking about on a summer day.

Base Camp in Golden

When winter comes knocking at the door the only sensible thing to do is to head to the Rocky Mountains, where adventure is waiting for you around every curve of the skin track. The snow is sugary powder, the ice is blue and the mountains are beautiful, big and in your face. The area surrounding Golden is the perfect winter playground where you can ice climb one day, ski big backcountry mountain lines the next and then head for a fun day at the ski resort.

Edelweiss Swiss Village

Tourism in Golden became popular in the early 1900s when the CPR employed experienced Swiss guides to safely guide tourists into the mountains. To make them feel more at home, the CPR constructed six Swiss-style chalets and called their accomplishment Edelweiss Village. 

Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre

A unique facility dedicated to awareness and conservation for the wolf. Northern Lights is home to six resident wolves, which you are able to view, and photograph. Interpretive tours are 25 minutes long and guides teach all about the wolves and their wild cousins.  

The centre also has a gift shop. The facility is cash only, and there is an ATM available on site.

The facility is great for all ages. There is a family rate (2 kids, 2 adults, $45).
