I was looking through old blog posts and realized that I had yet to write a post on favorite family hikes near Golden even though it’s one of our main ‘go to’ family activities – especially during the in-between seasons. So here it is, a post on some favorite ‘family-friendly’ hiking options. I’ve picked three hikes -- all close by and all relatively short (so they work well for younger kids and won’t threaten to take up the whole day).
Fall in Golden BC is for people who want to feel cozy and at home visiting a small mountain town. It’s the season where you probably get to feel most like a local. As the summer tourist season comes trickling to an end and the winter folks have yet to arrive, there’s just that perfect little window of time where the town slows down and gets kind of quiet – I think of it as Golden’s meditative season.
Ahhhhh, what’s better than crisp cold mornings and watching the leaves turn from various shades of green to reds and oranges. The correct answer is, nothing of course! It’s the time of year when people praise pumpkins and switch their shorts for sweaters. For me, it is my absolute favourite time of year! Especially here in the mountains, you couldn’t get it any better.
If you are lucky enough to be young and or on vacation, summer can be the best time of the year. For those of us who have learned the harsh reality of being an adult, summer isn’t as free and easy. That’s why every now and again when the weekend comes along; I make sure to have a lazy day. It gives me a chance to toodle around and enjoy my hometown, while using as little energy as possible. My kinda day!
Did you know that the wolf is a keystone species, holding an extremely crucial and unique place in our ecosystem? Were you aware that it’s usually only the Alpha pairs in wolf packs that reproduce, and that they are typically monogamous? Or that the wolf hierarchy itself includes a Beta role and also an Omega one? And that wolves can eat 20% of their body weight in a single meal – which is kinda like scarfing back 80 quarter pounders in a single sitting?
The idea of camping during the week while I was working came from…….well…..why not? The idea of camping in seven different spots in seven consecutive days around Golden came from….well….why not? With a little prep it’s no hassle at all, and I tried to keep all the spots within a half hour from town, this kept me close to all of the activities and amenities in Golden.
I don’t know about you, but when that sun is shining I know there’s only one place I’d like to be, at a patio somewhere. So I’m going to share all the patios from around town for all hours of the day, but hopefully I beat you there!
In early spring, Chuck Gorton of Avalanche Safety Solutions announced that Ryan Johannsen, Glacier Rafting, and himself would donate a canoe to Gorman Lake – equipped with two paddles and two lifejackets. Posting on Facebook, through Golden Classifieds, it went viral. Within hours, the feed had a number of shares, with over 100 + comments, spreading the word and giving kudos where kudos was deserved. For our family, the annual trek up to Gorman was going to look different this year.
Our athlete ambassador Shane Kroeger is back to compete in Singletrack 6 again this year. He will be writing a series of blogs about the preparation needed to race this multiday, cross-country event in Golden and the East Kootenays.
If you’re an avid iPhoneographer, like myself, you’ll know the value of good scenery. On a bluebird day, I’m often out at my various go to spots snapping pictures. The beauty of a small town is they don’t take long to get to each of them, because timing can either be a photographer's greatest enemy or secret friend. And, as the nice person I am, I’m going to share my top spots where I go for my pictures.
