Ballet Kelowna, the only professional dance company in the B.C. Interior, has a mandate to present inspiring and memorable dance to smaller centres in British Columbia and Alberta. Ballet Kelowna is also a regional leader committed to nurturing and promoting Canadian dancers and choreographers.

Founded in 2002, Ballet Kelowna took a significant leap forward two years ago when Simone Orlando took over as artistic director and CEO. An award-winning choreographer and former dancer with Ballet BC and the National Ballet of Canada, Orlando has advanced the profile and impact of Ballet Kelowna, which currently performs annually for over 10,000 audience members, both locally and on the road.

They are currently touring 150 Moves: A Celebration of Canadian Dance, commissioned in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary and featuring powerful work by established and emerging choreographers. The programme begins with Studies of Cash, Orlando’s own soulful exploration of the musical legacy of Johnny Cash. That is followed by the famed pas de deux from the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet and set to the ravishing Prokofiev score.

The evening concludes with an energetic new work set to Oscar Peterson’s iconic Canadiana Suite. A tribute to the various regions and cultures of this country, it features an electrifying blend of classical ballet and the expressive syncopations of jazz dance.
