Bear Awareness Days

Bear awareness days is an event put on by the Grizzly Bear Refuge at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Featuring demonstrations and guest speakers all with the goal of educating people about being bear aware in the wilderness.  There will be a birthday cake for boo, a scavenger hunt and a bear proof camping exercise all at the Grizzly Bear Refuge!

We have limited edition T-shirts for sale with partial proceeds being donated to the Grizzly Bear Foundation and their Project Rewild initiative.  They each cost $40 plus taxes and can be bought at Outfitters store in the plaza.

Schedule:

Saturday July 5
All Day – Scavenger Hunt at the Grizzly Bear Refuge
10am to 11am – Enhanced Ranger Talk at the Grizzly Bear Refuge
11:30am to 2pm – Make A Gift For Boo craft table at the Grizzly Bear Refuge
2pm – Bear-thday Cake for Boo! at the Grizzly Bear Refuge
Sunday July 6
All Day – Wildsight Info Booth and Soapstone Carving in the Plaza
All Day – Scavenger Hunt at the Grizzly Bear Refuge
11am to 12pm – Bearproof Camping Demonstration at the Grizzly Bear Refuge
 

Activities:
 

Enhanced Ranger Tours

• Wildsafe BC presentation on Bear Spray Training and Bear awareness and safety
• Grizzly Bear Refuge presentation on the Grizzly Bear Foundation and Project ReWild.

Make Boo a “gift” / Enrichment Workshop

• Make a special toy for Boo! We will have a special arts/crafts table to create enrichment items for Boo that the Rangers will place around his enclosure. This will help Boo discover, play, and problem solve with new objects for him in his enclosure.

Camping In Bear Country Demonstration with Boo

• This is a fun and interactive demonstration put on by our Grizzly Bear Refuge team and the one and only Boo the bear. For this demonstration we will set up two “campsites” in Boos enclosure. One campsite will follow the proper technique on how to camp in bear country while the other is what NOT to do. Once the camps are set up, we will release Boo back into the enclosure and see how he responds to both camping spots.

Boo Gets a Cake

• We will be giving Boo a specially made bearthday cake on Saturday to celebrate his special day.

Scavenger Hunt

• The Grizzly Bear Refuge team have created a family-friendly scavenger hunt that you can do at anytime throughout the weekend. Visit the Grizzly Bear Refuge Yurt to pick up the list of clues. Those who complete the scavenger hunt will be entered to win Grizzly Bear Refuge SWAG.
