Unequaled in Canada and virtually without a peer around the world, the Downchild Blues Band is a musical juggernaut that has nurtured the legacy of classic blues for nearly a half-century.
Downchild founder Donnie Walsh was still a teen in the 1960s when he fell in love with the powerful magic of artists such as Luther Allison, B.B. King, and Junior Wells. After launching his
own band he gradually became recognized as a stellar harmonica player and a uniquely expressive guitar stylist. And the band itself became a touring legend, giving literally thousands of take-no-prisoners performances in roadhouses, concert halls, saloons, and fairgrounds all around North America.
Long hailed as an institution – aside from being the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s legendary The Blues Brothers, Downchild has recorded two dozen albums, won two dozen Maple Blues Awards, and been nominated for numerous Junos (winning three!) – Downchild has lost none of its hard-playing panache.
“Downchild has always been bigger than the sum of its parts,” declares Walsh. “It’s knowing your audience, and knowing when to give them what they want.” And if what youwant is blues music that is brilliantly played, sharply arranged, and slickly paced, then get ready to party with one of the best “roadhouse blues bands” that ever laid down a jumpin’ boogie beat.
